Not that I have seen or heard of. Concerning whether I audited Flo Barnett at the AAC: Joyce Stephenson was auditing Flo Barnett in 1984. There arose a situation which Joyce did not feel confident about handling, so she suggested that Flo come up to the AAC for a session. I gave her a session in around October of 1984, which Flo was happy with. (This was not a NOTs session, it was a rehab session.) The C of S then contacted Flo and she had some sec checks or auditing from, I believe, Karen Jentzch and then some more from a female auditor at AOLA. (Most, or all, of this was sec checks.) This was around January or February of 1985. Sometime around February or March 1985 Flo went to a doctor because she got a bad headache. It was discovered that she had an aneurism and she needed an operation. She was operated on soon thereafter. The operation left her partly paralyzed and with impaired memory. Flo decided that she would like to come back to the AAC and get an assist from me, rather than go back to a Church of Scientology auditor. She came up to the AAC two or three times in around April or May of 1985 and I gave her sessions. At no time did we do any NOTs auditing. She did not feel that NOTs phenomena was the problem. She had other things that were bothering her, which we addressed in session. I could not cure her physical problems, and did not represent to her in any way that I could. I did try to make her feel better, which she said I had. She told me that the doctor had advised her that if she did not regain her memory and recover from the paralysis within 6 months, that she would never recover. Flo was taking medication, but she was having some problems with it, (side effects), and it was difficult for her to make the trip up to Santa Barbara. I encouraged her to continue seeing the doctor and to make sure she was taking the correct medication. That summer Flo had problems because her husband, Jim, lost his job. We sent one of our ministers down to them to try to help with this situation in around June or July of 1985. In September of 1985, Maude Castillo, an AAC staff member, informed me that she had gotten a phone call from one of Flo's daughters, Camille, who had been living with Flo and her husband. Camille called to tell us that Flo had died "from a brain hemorrhage" but that Camille wanted us to know how much Flo had appreciated the love and care that the AAC had extended to Flo. We were also informed that Flo had left a note but we never received it. (This was 6 months after Flo's operation.) Camille did not tell us that it had been a suicide and we had not received any word that she had been suicidal, or that she had been depressed. We had not been in touch with Flo for quite some time, although I heard later that she had been being visited by C of S/RTC representatives in August. In around October of 1985 Scientology Minutemen came up to the AAC, (Dennis Clark, Jim Jackson, and others); disrupted our Sunday Service and blamed us for Flo's death. They threw pieces of paper around with a drawing of Flo and a gun pointed to her head. We finally had to call the police, because they would not leave when asked to do so. This was the first time that I heard that Flo apparently had committed suicide. In November of 1985, RTC/Church of Scientology got a temporary restraining order against us and filed for an injunction. They asserted that we had received a copy of the NOTs pack that Robin Scott et al had gotten from Denmark in December of 1983. Their "proof" was that they had apparently found a copy of this pack in the home of Flo Barnett after she died. This was the first we had heard of Flo having had a NOTs pack. That NOTs pack did not come from the AAC. Joyce Stephenson came forward and said that she knew about the pack, because Joyce herself had given it to Flo. Joyce had received it anonymously in the mail in July of 1983 and wrote a declaration to that effect. We presented this declaration at the time of the injunction hearing and Joyce came to testify as a witness. She wasn't called to testify but on the next day, when Joyce wasn't in the court room, the C of S/RTC sought to discredit Joyce's declaration by trying to prove that she couldn't have photocopied it on the date she said she did. (If I remember correctly, they had a witness from a copy shop testify.) As you may know, we lost that injunction hearing, but appealed it to the 9th Circuit. During the 9th Circuit hearing I remember one of the judges commenting to the effect that just because a person may have committed suicide in a hotel room where there is a Gideon's Bible, doesn't mean that the Bible had anything to do with the suicide. This is the same case that we just won the 9th Circuit appeal on 11 April 1996, posted on Maureen Garde's page. In my opinion, the reason why Flo Barnett died wasn't to do with NOTs. If she did indeed commit suicide, it may have been due to the fact that she continued to have impaired memory and partial paralysis 6 months after an aneurism operation. (Keeping in mind that Flo had told me that apparently the doctor had advised her that if she didn' t recover in 6 months, she would never recover.) There also may have been additional factors.
